If you are selling your home and have a hardwired Tesla Wall Connector, you may be wondering whether you can remove it and take it with you.
Yes, a Tesla Wall Connector can be professionally disconnected and moved to your new home.
We recently helped a homeowner in Kemah, Texas remove a Tesla EV charger from the garage so it could be taken to a newly purchased home. Instead of leaving exposed wiring behind, we safely enclosed the existing EV charger circuit inside a small junction box with a blank cover plate.
What Happens to the Wiring After the EV Charger Is Removed?
A hardwired EV charger should not simply be taken off the wall and leave the electrical wiring exposed. The circuit must be turned off, tested and safely enclosed.
For this Kemah project, ProLectric:
- Turned off and verified the EV charger circuit was de-energized
- Disconnected and removed the Tesla Wall Connector
- Safely terminated the existing electrical conductors
- Enclosed the wiring inside an approved junction box
- Installed a blank cover plate
- Labeled the box as the EV charger circuit

Why Label the Existing EV Charger Circuit?
Labeling the junction box makes it clear that the wiring was previously used for an EV charger. This can help the next homeowner and their electrician identify the circuit if another Tesla Wall Connector or compatible EV charger is installed later.
The circuit should still be inspected before a new charger is connected. The electrician will need to verify the breaker size, wire size, electrical capacity and compatibility with the new charging equipment.
Can the Tesla Charger Be Reinstalled at the New Home?
In many cases, the same Tesla Wall Connector can be installed at the homeowner’s new property. However, every home has a different electrical system and layout.
Before reinstalling the charger, an electrician should evaluate:
- The electrical panel’s available capacity
- The required circuit and breaker size
- The distance from the panel to the charging location
- The best place to mount the charger
- Whether the wiring will run through an attic, garage or exterior area
- Whether a panel upgrade or subpanel is needed
Reusing the charger you already own may save money compared with purchasing a new Wall Connector for the new home.
Schedule EV Charger Removal Before Your Moving Date
If you plan to take your EV charger with you, schedule the removal before your final moving or closing date. The charger should be safely disconnected by a licensed electrician rather than removed by movers or left with exposed electrical wiring.
ProLectric can help with:
